Nowadays, 3D modelling, texturing and printing are becoming more available and popular. It’s really difficult to create a 3D object and give it every detail which an original object has. 3D texturing is one of the fundamental techniques used in modelling and has various properties.
We can say the texture is a pixel image laid down on a polygonal model which is created by a program. In simple words, we have a 2D image that wraps around the 3D object and we study how light effect that object. This texture can give color, reflection, refraction and realistic features to model.
The quality of the texture is defined by texels, made by a combination of the number of pixels on one texture. It’s time-consuming and hard work, but the resultant product will be as realistic as much effort you put.
In 3D texture the things we are concerned about are:
- Material
In a computer, an object is a simple object and we cannot verbally command it to become metal. Even if it’s metal, either it’s rusted, painted or shining. The very first aim and work of texture are to give recognition to material that which object it’s going to be? It can be rubber, wood or cotton or any object that’s how texturing works.
- Physical properties
When we touch a thing either smooth or rough, can be in different colours, these are physical properties. With texture, we can give smoothness, roughness, colours and other properties which are essential for an object to look real.
- Light effect
These texture effects are very important and are in great variety. We can show reflection on an object like in metals or you can show refraction if interested. This reflection creates shine on the object and shadow on the other side, which makes it more real. We can add some light effect which physically may be impossible.
- Small detail
Its small detail in an object makes it more realistic. For instance, you are creating an object which was obtained from rocks, by texture you can add small debris of mud or make it a little bit broken. We can add fake cracks, dents, bumps or wrinkles. In animation, these small details contribute a lot and attract the viewer attention a lot more.
- Rendering
When all of the detail necessary to define that object is given including mapping and then finishing touch is given by rendering. In this, all details are applied and the resultant object is formed, the ultimate piece of your hard work which can be further edited.
To make the object even more realistic and vivid texture mapping is used, which is mainly of two types:
- MIP mapping
It’s derived from a Latin word that means “many in small”. In this kind of mapping, several textures are copied and there is a small change in detail in each copy and then processed.
- Relief mapping
This mapping is further divided into various types
- Bump mapping
This technology creates a relief however all types of elements are used in the process. When light falls on the surface of an object in such a way which creates an effect in which the pixels of the surface are displaced virtually. This surface can be helpful in the creation of shades of objects or in providing different sites with different lights. You can for deep pitches, like the one in movies or may be able to form projections.
2. Normal mapping
In this technology, data is saved in form of texels which is a unit of texture, and in-process normal pixels are converted on the base of a chorochromatic map. Thankfully three texture channels are utilized in this mapping which makes it easier and is more accurately.
