Unfortunately, sometimes accidents happen. Since people spend a huge portion of their time at work, a lot of these accidents tend to happen in the workplace. In fact, the workplace is the second most common place where incidents and personal injuries occur, second only to the roads.
If you have been injured at work, you may find yourself stressed, anxious, and unsure what to do next. Don’t worry, there are a few simple steps and procedures to follow to help you get through this. Read on for all these quick steps you need to take when you have been injured at work.

Common Workplace Injuries

As mentioned, there are a lot of injuries that occur regularly in the workplace. There are over 7 million workplace injuries per year. According to expert personal injury lawyers, around 99 million days worth of workers’ time and productivity is lost each year due to injury. This is a huge amount, creating a huge waste of time and money. But, what are the most common workplace injuries?

●     Slips, Trips, and Falls

The most common cause of workplace injuries is simple slips, trips, and falls. It is so easy for small hazards to be left in the way of employees, causing them to trip and fall. Spilled liquids, cables, or boxes are some of the most common hazards. Injuries may range from cuts and scrapes to broken bones, or worse.

●     Manual Handling

Many jobs require a level of manual handling. Whether it’s moving heavy items, stacking shelves, or moving patients in a hospital, manual handling requires strength and proper lifting technique. If these techniques aren’t followed, you may end up with an injury.

●     Construction and Manufacturing Machinery

Unsurprisingly, the manufacturing and construction industries suffer from a huge amount of injury cases. The machinery involved is often heavy duty. Any incorrect use or improper care of said machinery can cause serious harm.

Step 1: Record Everything

The first thing you need to do post-accident is record and report everything. You must inform your manager and other staff of the hazard, record it in any incident books your company keeps, and, if possible, remove the hazard. Make sure every detail has been properly recorded, following your company’s guidelines. This can – and likely will – become part of your evidence later. Failure to record your incident could ruin your chances of a fair settlement.

Step 2: Seek Medical Attention

It is also vital that you seek medical attention as soon as possible. Whether your injuries are severe or not, you always need to get checked out by a medical professional. Even if you don’t think you’re hurt – you don’t want to miss something that you discover later on. Once again, medical records can form a crucial part of your case.

Step 3: Find a Lawyer

At this point, you should consider reaching out to a lawyer. There will be plenty of personal injury lawyers in your area, so you should find a local attorney. The benefits of hiring locally are huge. Not only will your legal team be familiar with all the local laws and rules surrounding these sorts of cases, but they will also be conveniently local and on hand to help at all times. Make sure they are specialized in personal injury or workplace law so that you get the best team possible.

Step 4: Provide Evidence

Once you have chosen your legal team, they will help you with starting to build your case. All the previously mentioned evidence, such as any medical information or records from work, will be taken by your lawyers. You should also keep a record of any lost earnings or expenses you have had to pay for as a direct result of your injury.
They will also help you gather further evidence. For example, they may interview other staff from your work or seek to obtain CCTV footage. Rest assured, a great legal team will do everything they can to build you the strongest possible case.

Step 5: Seek Workers’ Comp

In most states, workers’ compensation insurance is a requirement in workplaces. This means that your employer is obliged to file a claim on your behalf and provide you with some form of an insurance payout. This may cover medical bills or sick pay, but may not provide you with the amount of money you and your lawyers think that you deserve after your incident. Regardless, you should still – with the help of your lawyers – seek an insurance payout. Afterward, you can decide whether to pursue your case further.

Step 6: Seek a Settlement

If your workers’ compensation doesn’t pay what you think is enough, or if you believe you are still being treated unfairly, you can continue with your legal team and seek a settlement. There are so many things not covered in workers’ compensation claims that your legal team may advise you to sue for.
For example, workers’ compensation often doesn’t deal with long-term mental health issues following a case like this. However, mental health problems do often arise. Another example is that sick pay is often only covered up to a certain amount and you may be expecting to have much longer off work. Regardless, your legal team will advise you on whether they think you can extract more money from your case by seeking a settlement from your employer. If they think you can, you should go for it.

Step 7: Relax

Now, the hard part is over. Hopefully, you have received a compensation payment and/or a settlement. You can now take the necessary time to look after yourself post-injury, without fear of going broke, losing your job, or anything else. This step is just as important as the rest of them. After all, your health should be more important than anything else.
These steps should take you through the whole process, while your legal team gives you more detailed, more expert advice. It will all be worth it in the end. Then, you can start to put the whole situation behind you and get on with the rest of your life.
