Starbucks is one of many foodservice brands planning for a future with more drive-thru units. The rise of off-premises dining has spurred the popularity of drive-thrus, and chains including Sweetgreen and Shake Shack are redesigning their restaurant formats to cater to customers in cars. Sales of retail properties with drive-thrus in Los Angeles have gone from about 50% of the total to 90% over the past year, according to real estate company CBRE.
