Is virtual reality changing the construction industry? It’s easy to believe that virtual reality having an effect on the construction industry is still years away, yet several construction companies are already using virtual reality to map out their builds. And, with virtual reality gaining popularity in other sectors over the past few years, the construction industry is discovering just how beneficial virtual reality is…
Virtual reality in the construction industry – a summary:
Creating walk-through’s
If you’ve asked yourself if virtual reality is changing the construction industry, look no further than a virtual reality (VR) walk-through. VR allows clients to do a final walk-through of a project before any construction has even taken place.
By giving designers and architects access to VR, they are able to completely transform any blueprint or drawing they have into a fully finished project. Clients are taken inside their creation, giving them a great opportunity to check over everything – from the layout of each room to the structure itself. The ramifications of providing a client with a VR walk-through pre-build are, potentially, huge. It means that any changes the client wants to make can be discussed before any plans are handed over to the builders. And by making those changes in the design phase instead of the building phase, it could cut down costs massively and result in quicker and clearer builds.
Greater collaboration
Virtual reality also allows for a much greater level of collaboration early on in the project between the contractors, the designers and the architects. Improvements that need to be made can be identified early, and can be quickly addressed. Often, when there are multiple workers on the same project, each one will have a different idea of what the end project will look like. Virtual reality has proven to be a quick and effective way to get everyone working to the same agenda because it brings any plans to life, and with everyone working towards the same vision, you’re far more likely to get a cohesive collaboration.
Fundraising
When it comes to big projects such as hospitals or even universities, a great deal of fundraising is often required before any builders arrive on site. Although fundraising through established methods can potentially lead to a new construction project, VR is making it a lot easier for fundraisers to bring their concept to life. It’s far better to let a potential backer take a walk-through the project than show them a drawing, and if they’re enthused by the plans, fundraisers could be taking a big step towards getting their project off the ground.
Make way… virtual reality is changing the construction industry – and it’s here to stay!
