Technology is vastly improving the education system. Lessons are more personalized, relevant, and current. Assessments are returned faster than before and with accurate feedback.

Special Education

An area where technology can be of help, but which not all schools have been able to implement, is in special education. Some view these technological apps as too advanced for those with special needs. Others think technology is too expensive, so it’s not worth the investment.

Such views, however, are grossly incorrect. With newer companies expanding their markets, education technology is becoming more affordable. Developers are also tailor-fitting applications to fit the needs of their target markets.

The following are some ways that technology can be of help in special education by Writer For My Paper.

#1 Speech recognition and synthesis

Many students and employees are making use of speech recognition apps so that they can dictate what they have in mind. Words are quickly translated to texts that can be read later or even sent to a teacher. Speech synthesis programs allow the computer to vocalize text so that a person can listen instead of reading, which helps people whose hands may be busy doing something (driving or fixing something) or who are more inclined to audio-learning.

Such technology, however, is helpful to those who are visually impaired or are not able to make use of their hands for typing or writing. This allows them to give their answers without the need for someone else to write them down. And for those who cannot see, they will be able to listen to books and other materials they need to learn.

#2 Alternative communication

Aside from speech synthesis programs, another way for someone with a disability to communicate is through alternative communication. Rather than letters or words, the interface may make use of sign language or pictures.

For those who cannot speak or move their arms, there are also eye-gaze devices where eye movement can select the letter, word, or object that they would like to communicate.

#3 Distance learning

Distance learning can help those who have difficulty going to a regular school because of mobility issues or the lack of facilities for the physically-challenged. Moreover, families can save a lot on transportation costs (special transport to accommodate a wheelchair) and accommodation costs (if there is a need to rent), using the money for better technological equipment.

#4 Better means for assessment and monitoring

A final way that technology may help special education is in assessing and monitoring students. Many software packages can help teachers keep track of students’ performances. This is very helpful if the student transfers to another school or if another special education teacher is assigned. The records will be easier to access so that any adjustments by the teacher are minimal.

Summary

Technology is changing the way schools are run, improving the delivery and assessment of lessons around the world. Hopefully, schools will invest in such technology for the needs of their special education students, so that everybody can benefit.
