Demand for more sustainable building options continues to grow and green construction has become increasingly desirable across the world.
Looking to gauge the ‘state of green’ in the U.S. office market, we turned to CommercialEdge research data, and delved into the details of green office construction in the U.S. during 2010 and 2020 to identify the 20 greenest U.S. cities in terms of office space, as well as to offer a breakdown of sustainable building practices by LEED certification level in each city.
Here are some highlights from the study:

  • Atlanta ranked 11th in the country for percentage of green office space – 37.77% at the close on 2020.
  • Between 2010 and 2020, developers here delivered 5.4 million square feet of green office space, of which 2.2 million was proposed or certified LEED Silver — the 4th largest expansion in this category.
  • Atlanta was also 9th in terms of LEED Platinum office space added — developers here delivered nearly 1.5 million square feet of new space in this category, between 2010 and 2020.
  • The local green office total in Atlanta increased from 41.1 million square feet in 2010 to 46.5 million square feet in 2020.
  • Nationally, Washington D.C., San Francisco, and Chicago are the greenest U.S. cities in terms of office space, with around 63% of it being LEED-certified.
