Gilbane Building Company has announced the launch of the Spring session of its 2021 Gilbane Rising Contractor Program – a program that offers certified minority, women-owned (M/WBE) and disadvantaged trade partners an opportunity to broaden industry skills and knowledge while also gaining first-hand insight on working with Gilbane.
Given growing interest and participation, the program has expanded to incorporate more Gilbane regions and has nearly twice the number of participants than in previous years.
The goal of the bi-annual program is to establish strong partnerships with diverse contractors new to working with Gilbane, while enhancing participant competitiveness through a combination of knowledge-sharing and mentorship. To ensure the program serves as a connection to real-world opportunities, the classroom curriculum focuses on strategies for winning work and performing successfully on job sites.
“Our goal is to build long-lasting relationships with our trade partners by sharing our knowledge and proven business principles,” said Yvette Stevens, vice president and director of economic inclusion and community affairs, Gilbane Building Company. “We want to set up these businesses for success through mentorship and in turn, strengthen the diversity and competitiveness of our supplier pool.”
Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, the Spring 2021 Rising Contractor Program is being held virtually. The course is broken into eight, two-hour weekly sessions that are split between large group instruction and smaller local break-out groups. Gilbane is dedicated to continuing mentorship and advocacy for the participants beyond the eight-week session. Nearly 70 firms are participating in the latest cohort of the Rising Contractor Program.
“I appreciate the fact that Gilbane is not just talking the talk about helping M/WBE firms, but acting on it by adding value through this program,” Wendy Peters, President of J.W.P Corp., a general contracting firm in New York. “I hope the Rising Contractor program becomes a model for other large firms.”
The program offers multiple benefits for participants including:

  • Developing working relationships with Gilbane personnel in key departments, such as purchasing and estimating
  • Gaining intimate knowledge of “doing business with Gilbane” – from bid solicitation to project closeout
  • Receiving step-by-step guidance on Gilbane’s pre-qualification process
  • Enjoying a one-year mentorship agreement with a Gilbane project executive who will serve as internal champion
  • Receiving automatic feedback for unsuccessful bids

Another cohort of the Rising Contractor Program will be offered in the Fall of 2021. For more information about the program, visit: https://info.gilbaneco.com/gilbane-rising-contractors.
