Saint John’s University has a new iconic landmark. A large pedestrian bridge, built and installed by LS Black Constructors, was put in place this weekend. The structure connects the main campus to the Flynntown area of the Collegeville, Minnesota campus.

The Flynntown Bridge spans more than 264 feet and is constructed of steel with more than 60 yards of reinforced concrete to form the surface. The six sections of the bridge were fabricated off-site, then set in place with one of the largest mobile cranes in the U.S.
The project is a partnership between the University and LS Black Constructors, designed to build community and create a connection between two sections of the campus. The collaboration includes two new areas, the Flynntown Bridge and the Saint Elizabeth Seton Village townhome complex. The townhome development adds two residential structures along the shore of Stumpf Lake which will house approximately 100 students. The buildings flank the walkway to the new bridge providing easy access to the University’s main campus and Flynntown area.
The projects are the first collaboration between LS Black Constructors and Saint John’s. “This is a multidimensional project for us,” says Pat Block, LS Black’s vice president of commercial construction. “We’re proud to be helping the University enhance student life and connect the campus community. We’re also excited about the relationship we are building with Saint John’s.”
“The bridge provides unique and more efficient access to Flynntown,” says Mike Connolly, vice president for student development at Saint John’s University. “The bridge, new townhome-style living, and open green space will significantly enhance the residential student experience. Also, the design fits the architecture of our University and is in line with our mission of creating community and being good stewards of the land.”
Construction on both components of the project began this summer and is set for completion in 2022.
