Steve Bachman, Retail Construction Services

The President and CEO of Retail Construction Services on the best Pandora playlists, keeping in touch with his team and customers, and why it is important to find what makes you happy and chase it.
What is the most cherished item in your home office?
The photos of my wife and kids either fishing, skiing or anything else outdoors. There are always smiles and a showing of appreciation of the time we get to spend together.

What is your favorite time to get things done?

Early in the morning before the phone starts ringing.
What is the soundtrack that plays in the background of your office?
It is usually Pandora Premium with the “Out of Africa” or similar genre.
What does a typical work day look like?
I am working remotely, so now it starts earlier with catching up on the WSJ or other news feeds, (not necessarily in a sport coat). I work through and respond to emails, have a good breakfast by mid-morning, hit the phones to drum up business, and then have a quiet lunch on the deck. I also check-in with co-workers via phone, some video meeting(s), more emails, in and out, and wind down by 5 p.m. for happy hour (not quite every day, but definitely more than when I went into the office every day).

How are you staying connected with your team? Customers?

Mostly by phone, We have some “teams meetings,” occasional FaceTime meetings—a little of everything. I also stay connected with other RCA Members with Zoom meetings and Zoom “Happy Hour” on the weekends.
What is the craziest thing that has ever happened to you on a job site?
One of our superintendents years ago was chased around on a jobsite by a tradesman with a drywall axe. It ended alright once the tradesperson was hauled off by the local police. I am sure the guy was juiced-up on something.
Name the band you cannot take off your playlist.
Either Elton John (think of how many decades this guy has been writing and performing music), or Earth, Wind and Fire.
What are you binge watching right now?
“Outer Banks.” I just finished “Ozark.” My wife is from St. Louis and tells me that the Ozarks are not as creepy as the show indicates.

Favorite comfort food.

Sharon’s baby-back ribs
Best advice you ever received?
“May you live as long as you want to, and want to as long as you live.” We all need to find a way to make this happen.
Biggest influence in your life?
My wife. She keeps me humble, encouraged in everything I do and happy beyond my wildest imagination.
What trait do you most admire?
Integrity.

What advice would you give your younger self?
Be a little more prudent with the resources you have been given. Be more careful with how and where you spend your time and money, and who you do it with.

What is the first thing you are going to do when you are able to get back to some sense of normalcy?
Figure out what that really looks like. What do I need to change to adapt to this “normalcy” and find peace and security.
