After the July 2016 Center for Disease Control (CDC) report showed construction is one of the most at-risk industries for suicide, more than 30 key organizations have pledged support of the Construction Industry Alliance for Suicide Prevention. Formed less than one year ago by the Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA), the mission of the Alliance is to provide and disseminate information and resources for suicide prevention and mental health promotion in construction.
CFMA President & CEO Stuart Binstock said, “We are humbled by the industry’s strong support of this initiative to save the lives of our most valued resources – our human capital. The press coverage this topic has received from industry associations and top business publications has been overwhelming and continues to bolster the importance of building a zero-suicide industry.”
CFMA is pleased to announce the newest Alliance members: Asphalt Pavement Association of Oregon; The Association of Union Constructors (TAUC); Construction Management Association of American (CMAA); Construction Marketing Association; CW Safety & Health Management Program; The Facing Addiction Action Network, FCA International; Forefront: Innovations in Suicide Prevention; The International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 302; International Union of Operating Engineers (IUOE Local 478); Lines for Life; Plumbing-Heating-Cooling Contractors Association (PHCCA); Sheet Metal and Air Conditioning Contractors’ National Association (SMACNA); Tennessee Suicide Prevention Network; and Washington Asphalt Pavement Association.
Binstock also noted, “National, regional, and local Suicide Prevention Summits are planned throughout 2017 to spread the word about addressing this industry imperative. Our hope is that these events are shared with local chapters, CFMA members, and industry members of the Alliance and garner active participation and collaboration among mental health professionals and construction industry CEOs, CFOs, HR professionals, and Safety and Risk managers.”
