Penney’s to open 500 in-store appliance showrooms this year

Penney unveiled appliance showrooms at two Minnesota stores last week and will debut six more in the state as part of a push to put the big-ticket items in 500 of its 1,000 U.S. stores by year’s end. Penney’s will showcase up to 215 dishwashers, refrigerators and other appliances in the showrooms and offer more than 1,000 other models online. Read the Star Tribune story here

Sandwich chains win as fast-casual demand grows

imgresSandwich franchisor Jersey Mike’s Subs has more than doubled its size in the past three years, from 700 units to about 1,500 that are open or in the works. The rise in the fast-casual sector has been a boon to the chain and others, including Jimmy John’s and Firehouse Subs, that offer easily customized meals and healthy options.
