Hotel rates hit highest year-over-year growth in cycle

Average daily rate grew 5.4 percent year over year in August, the highest recorded in the current recovery cycle and the highest since before the downturn, according to STR. Revenue per available room was up 9.4 percent year over year, second only to the 10 percent growth in May this year and the second-highest since September 2011. Read the HotelNewsNow.com story here

Smokey Bones to open 1st new eateries in nearly a decade

Smokey Bones Bar & Fire Grill soon will open its first new location in more than eight years. The new location is scheduled to open in Peabody, Mass., at the North Shore in February 2015. The company, which is back in growth mode, hopes to open two to four restaurants in 2015. Read the Orlando Sentinel story here

Lower Manhattan hotel pipeline filling up amid strong demand

STR reports that 3,292 rooms in 17 hotels are in the pipeline in Lower Manhattan, denoting a 35 percent increase in room count and a 30 percent increase in hotel count year over year. The development boom is a response to increased tourism in the area, which helped raise occupancy by 1.5 percent and demand by 3.2 percent through August. Read The Commercial Observer story here

Loews Hotels plans high-end hotel collection

In January, Loews Hotels & Resorts will debut OE Collection, a lifestyle concept composed of upper-upscale and luxury properties. Loews will assume management of the hotels, which will add the OE Collection to their names as a sub-brand while otherwise retaining their original flags and names. Read the HotelsMag.com story here

$1.5B mixed-use project is set to rise in Miami

A plan for a $1.5 billion mixed-use development to be jointly developed by Miami Worldcenter Associates, Taubman Centers and The Forbes Co., has been unanimously approved by Miami officials. The project, dubbed Miami Worldcenter, which will span several blocks, will include a 1,800-room hotel, a convention center and retail space. Read the Reuters story here
